1. Brazil is the largest South American country in terms of area and population. It is also the only country on the continent where Portuguese is spoken rather than Spanish.

2.Brazil is the country with the largest number of Catholics among local residents.

3.According to one version, the state was named Brazil in honor of a mythical island – the Irish believe that it is located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean.

4.Brazil ranks first in the world in the number of species of primates and freshwater fish found on its territory. In addition, it holds second position in the number of amphibian species, third place in the number of bird species, and fifth place in the diversity of reptiles.

5.In 2013, the Brazilian authorities allowed the official registration of marriage between spouses of the same sex. Three years earlier, a similar law was passed in Argentina (see interesting facts about Argentina).
